INCIAMPARE NELLA MEMORIA (TRIPPING OVER MEMORY)

 

The “Stolperseteine” designed by German artist Gunter Demnig, are stumbling blocks installed in several European countries, including Italy. These simple brass cobblestones with an extraordinary symbolic value are engraved with the names of the victims of the Nazi-fascist persecution.

 

The goal is to retrace a map of all the places in Rome that underwent the deportations, while clearly stating how many neighborhoods in the city have suffered the wound of the roundups and deportations. But also and most importantly, to point out that the victims were persecuted for many different reasons: religion, politics, race.

 

A physical journey through the streets of the Eternal City and, in parallel, an intimate journey retracing the history of the victims, combining the past with the present. Both a solid and tangible testimony of our History and a spiritual and visual recount on how a city, Rome, should forever hold on to the memory of its tragic events, so that they will never happen again.

 

Through interviews, archive images, stills and footage of the city where the deportations and arrests have taken place, the film traces a selection of the victims’ stories, emphasizing their historical traits and giving account of human events.
